Yesterday, the Center for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) participated in a stakeholder engagement and consultation on the draft exposure document for the Nigeria Public Sector Governance Code (NPSGC). The event, organized by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), provided a platform for key stakeholders to review and provide input on the proposed governance framework aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency in public sector management.
The NPSGC, once finalized and implemented, has the potential to strengthen fiscal transparency, promote ethical leadership, and improve governance structures across public institutions in Nigeria. Establishing clear guidelines for effective governance is crucial in ensuring public resources are managed efficiently and with integrity.
However, while the proposed code represents a positive step towards reinforcing public sector governance, the Center emphasizes the critical role of civil society organizations (CSOs) and other relevant stakeholders in both its development and implementation. The inclusion of independent oversight bodies, media, academia, and advocacy groups will help ensure that the governance code is not only well-structured but also effectively monitored and enforced.
We believe that a truly transparent and accountable public sector requires a multi-stakeholder approach, where citizens and civil society actively participate in governance reforms. We therefore call for an inclusive implementation process that prioritizes collaboration, continuous engagement, and independent evaluation to ensure the NPSGC achieves its intended objectives.
The Center remains committed to advocating for governance reforms that promote integrity, accountability, and fiscal transparency in Nigeria. We look forward to further engagements on this crucial initiative and will continue to contribute to discussions that shape a more accountable public sector.
