The Center for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) is pleased to announce the public presentation of the fourth edition of the Transparency Integrity Index (TII), an annual assessment of public institutions’ compliance with proactive disclosure and access to information practices. The event is scheduled for October 8, 2024, at 9:00 am at the Federal Ministry of Finance Main Auditorium, Abuja, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, billed to deliver the keynote address.
Developed to commemorate the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), which is celebrated every 28th of September, the TII has, for the past four years, awakened a culture of proactive disclosure of public information, thereby promoting transparency and integrity in Nigeria’s public sector. It has also encouraged civic participation and public trust, and enabled public scrutiny of how public institutions comply with legal requirements to disclose information.
This year’s IDUAI theme, “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector”, aligns with the objective of the Index as it emphasizes the necessity of transparent governance and active public engagement in decision-making processes. The TII is a vital tool in this effort, enabling stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the public to track and assess the performance of government bodies in adhering to global standards of open governance.
As Nigeria strives toward the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and works to combat corruption, transparency remains a key element in achieving inclusive and effective governance. The TII directly addresses these goals by providing a measurable framework to evaluate how well institutions are delivering on their promises of openness and public accountability.
In his remark ahead of the event, the Executive Director of the Center, Dr. Umar Yakubu noted that the Index has become a benchmark for assessing how well public institutions in Nigeria are embracing transparency. “By encouraging proactive disclosure and greater access to information, we can reinforce the fight against corruption.
“The Index has set a new standard for public sector transparency in Nigeria. It is more than a ranking, it is a call to action for all public institutions to prioritize openness and accountability. We believe that the TII can become a catalyst for positive change in public service delivery, and through it, we are empowering citizens to engage more effectively with government institutions.”
The fourth edition of the TII will feature a detailed ranking of over 500 public institutions, 36 states and the 774 local government areas (LGAs), highlighting top performers while also providing recommendations for improvement.
The event will feature key stakeholders from government, civil society, media, private sector and the general public.
