Kidnapping has remained the most virulent form of banditry in Nigeria. It has become the most pervasive and intractable violent crime in the country. Kidnapping can also be false imprisonment by means of abduction, both of which are separate crimes that when committed simultaneously upon the same people merge as the single crime of kidnapping. Kidnapping may be done to demand for ransom in exchange for releasing the victim, or for other illegal purposes.
The present penalty for kidnapping ranges from one to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment for extreme cases involving, for instance, murder.
