A 32-year-old man has been apprehended by the EFCC in Benue State for allegedly stealing other people’s ATM cards and using same to withdraw all the money in the victims’ bank accounts. The suspect, Sunday Onovo, hails from Nkanu-West Local Government Area of Enugu State and is resident in Makurdi Metropolis. EFCC’s Head of Public Affairs Unit in Makurdi Zonal Office, Mrs. Nwanyinma Okeanu, disclosed to journalists that the suspect was apprehended at the premises of one of the new generation banks in Otukpo LGA.
Okeanu said the suspected fraudster would among other tricks go to the Benue State University (BSU) gate to report to the security personnel that he lost his ATM card and that while the unsuspecting security men would hand over the pack of lost-but-found ATM cards of students to him to check if his own was among, he would in the process steal some of the cards.
The EFCC further narrated that the suspect would arm himself with the stolen cards and hang around ATM points to offer help to people who had problems operating the machine during which he would deliberately give his victim his stolen card and take the innocent person’s own away and later go back to withdraw all his victim’s money. Okeanu added that the suspect confessed to have made more than N1m through such fraudulent means just as he also disclosed that there were so many other young men involved in the crime across different locations in the country.
